Machine translation post editing - ENGLISH > ITALIAN

HOTEL WEBSITE - case study

🚫 Problem: the AI generated translation of the check-in / check-out window of this hotel ​website delivered a poor, dizzying, and confusing output, affecting the brand's professional ​image and leading to a high bounce rate - frustrated and discouraged Italian tourists leaving the ​website because of poor user experience and lack of trust.

🔸”Registrare”: this is the literal translation of “register”. Far from being a fit term, the verb in its ​infinitive form, so it is completely unfit. Even using it in its reflexive form, it still wouldn't be the ​right term choice.

🔸”Guardare”: this translation was embarassing and leading potential clients to leave the ​website in disbelief. “Guardare” means “to look at something” or “to watch”. This is a literal ​translation for the formal synonym “examine”, and again, it's far from being a fit term. This ​machine translation choice was puzzling, and affected the professional image of the hotel.

💡Solution: in case of an AI generated website translation, it's vital to always count on a ​professional revision afterwards, to ensure coherence and accuracy, resulting in customers ​trusting the brand and taking the desired action.

One option is to leave the terms as they are in the English form, as they are quite common ​and well-known to the Italian audience. Or in this case, they can also be translated into ​“Arrivo” and “Partenza”.

My choice was the latter, as it lets the tourist have an immediate grasp of the matter, ​enhancing the overall user experience.

English Heritage is one of England's most prestigious charities managing historic ​monuments, buildings and places.

However, tourist from Italy were choosing other sites that are deemed to be more popular ​amongst Italians due to the absence of written and audio information in Italian. The project ​involved translating into Italian the Lincoln Bishop Palace script for the audioguide to make it ​usable and accessible for Italian tourist.

Research is key when it comes to translation, even more so with historical buildings.

The script featured a highly descriptive text with several technical terms about architectural ​elements, weapons, and important historical characters’ names:

• Bishop Saint Hugh: Vescovo Sant’Ugo

• A fine bay window: bovindo di pregevole fattura
  
• Lead: piombo
  

Rewording was needed to ensure language fluency: English loves the passive voice, whereas ​Italian prefers the active voice.

In the middle ages up to a gallon of beer ​was drunk by each member of the ​household.

Nel Medioevo ogni membro del nucleo ​domestico poteva bere anche fino 4 litri e ​mezzo di birra.

AUDIOGUIDE - case study

Localizing units of measurement - "a gallon of beer”

Translating “a gallon” into Italian as “un gallone” would not have been effective, as Italians don’t use ​gallons as unit of measurement - we use liters. Cultural accuracy means delivering a localized text ​that enables the reader to have an immediate idea of what they are reading.

Step 1 was to convert 1 gallon into liters. Step 2 was to select the exact measure, as UK gallons are ​not the same as US gallons or other countries' gallons. In this case, the text refers to UK gallons.

Following a thorough research, 1 UK gallon equals roughly 4,5 liters.

The idea was Italian tourists to have an immediate grasp of the quantity, not having to do the ​conversion themselves ✅

Localizing units of mesurement was also needed.

Kibale ​Forest National Park itself is an extensive tract of dense tropical ​rainforest located just south of the town Fort Portal.

- The various ecosystems in this space are reputed to harbor the ​highest density of primates in all of Africa. The rare red colobus ​monkey as well as the black and white colobus are just some of the ​primates you may encounter on your forest walks here. The highlight ​of a trip to Kibale Forest is of course to spend some time observing ​the wonderfully entertaining chimpanzees.

Estos datos son sumamente ​importantes para la seguridad y tranquilidad del cliente que se sienta a la mesa. Esto ​conlleva una falta de confianza en el local y la búsqueda de opciones competidoras ​que ofrezcan una versión de la carta traducida.

💡Una traducción al italiano permite que el cliente entienda la historia y la calidad ​detrás de la selección de materias primas y la elaboración de la carta, además de la ​información sobre los alérgenos.

La fiesta ha sorteado no pocas dificultades a lo largo de la historia, ​pero su espíritu lúdico-deportivo ha sobrevivido a todas ellas. Todo ​en las piraguas invita al disfrute. Los días previos a la prueba, el río ​Sella es un “hervidero” de entrenamientos, preparación de los ​deportistas, de los equipos, puesta a punto de las embarcaciones.

This worksheet will help you define your circle of competence ​and then delegate or remove anything else so that you can stay in your ​“zone”.
